Morgan Silver Dollars
The production of Morgan Silver Dollars began following the passage of the Bland-Allison Act in February 1878, which restored silver as legal tender. Prior to this, the Coinage Act of 1873 had suspended the minting of silver dollars and other silver coins, effectively placing the nation on a gold-based standard.
Silver had declined in value due to several factors, including the discovery of one of the largest silver deposits in history. In response, Congress moved to reintroduce silver alongside gold in U.S. currency. The Bland-Allison Act mandated that the U.S. Treasury purchase a set quantity of silver each month, which would then be struck into silver coinage.
The U.S. Mint
The U.S. Mint has created many of the most renowned coins in American history. The Morgan Dollar series stands as a clear example of its exceptional craftsmanship, representing a lasting piece of the nation’s numismatic legacy.
